Baccarat Glass was established in 1765 by the Bishop of Metz who wanted to build industry in the little village of Baccarat, some 250 miles east of Paris.
The Verrerie de Sainte Anne at Baccarat made all kinds of utility glassware, from windows to bottles and tableware. They flourished for many years surviving the French Revolution (1789) but struggling through the Napoleonic Wars (1812-1815).
Baccarat is famous for its stunning paperweights, its superb crystal glass tableware, for its 19th century colored lead crystal glass, opaline glassware, and for its beautiful decanters, bottles, and superb lead crystal sculptures of animals and birds.
The technique of embedding millefiori canes was taken over by Baccarat in the 1840s and lead crystal glass Baccarat paperweights with millefiori designs surpass anything produced in that period from either Bohemia or Venice.
